Founded in 1948, the Japan Karate Association (JKA) was highly appreciated for its social activities, and received approval from the Japanese Ministry of Education as a “General Incorporated Association” in 1957. From then until now, we have devoted our effort to inherit and develop this irreplaceable martial arts culture born in Japan. Consequently, on 21st March, 2012, we were approved as ” Public Interest Incorporated Association” by the Prime Minister.
The Japan Karate Association aims to promote improvement of its skills and self-discipline by research and instruction of Karatedo, thereby contributing to the improvement of the well-being of the people and cultivate a sound martial arts spirit. Moreover, it aims to contribute to world peace by spreading the spirit of Japanese martial arts which respects courtesy to countries all over the world.
In order to achieve these objectives, we the JKA engage in the following activities.
Each board member and player from all over the world has inherited and represents the teaching of Master Funakoshi.
In recent years, more and more people middle-aged and older are interested in Martial Arts Karate advocated by the Japan Karate Association. And the number of such JKA members has increased year by year.
Making opportunities for every age group, and leading them to the way to learn deeply about Martial Arts Karate – JKA acts up to its principle as lifelong Karate.
Chairman of the JKA
Kusahara Katsuhide
Born 1941 in Hokkaido. After graduating from Tokyo University, College of arts and Sciences, he entered the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture.
Kusahara studied at cornell University and achieved MBA for Government and Business, and was then assigned to UNESCO. After that he became Chief of International study section, chief of professional education section, chief of medical education section, chief of Personnel Division of Minister’s Secretariat, Deputy Director-General, Higher Education Bureau. From 1997 to 2009, Vice President of Takushoku University, President of Takushoku University Hokkaido College.
He was the Head of the Karate-do club at Takushoku University. In 2012, he became Director of Japan Karate Association and in October 2015 became the chairman. Moreover, he has held positions such as member of Japan UNESCO domestic committee, member of The United States – Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange and member of Japan-U.S. Educational Commission (Fulbright Japan). He was a professor at Takushoku University, Managing Director of The 21-Seiki Bunka Gakujyutsu Zaidan, and Managing Director of The English Language Education Council. Inc. Holder of 6th Dan of Aiki-do and a Director of Aikikai Foundation.
Chief Instructor of the JKA
Master Ueki Masaaki
Master Ueki Masaaki who succeeded the second chief instructor Sugiura, and inaugurated as the third chief instructor.
Since high school, he studied under Master Sugiura (the second chief instructor), then went on to Asia University. Soon after graduation, he joined the Japan Karate Association as the sixth trainee and achieved excellent results in numerous competitions.
As the head instructor of the headquarters, he was devoted to the development and instruction both within and outside Japan.
He served as executive director since July 22, 1995 and greatly contributed to the development of the Japan Karate Association. He was inaugurated as the third chief instructor on May 29, 2010 and continues his work today.
